W.A.S.P.: Kill, fuck, die
27/02/04 || Statik Majik
This is probably the angriest W.A.S.P. album there is. Or that´s how I feel about it. Well, the song titles should give a small hint about this. This also happens to be my other favourite W.A.S.P. album. The other one being their first, self-titled. And up to this day those two seem to be the only W.A.S.P. albums I still listen to regurarly. And just in case this really matters to ya: I´ve been a fan every since WASP released their first album, which was back in 1984. So fucken what if I was 9 years old at that point?
What makes this album stand out from the rest of the W.A.S.P. albums is that… well, it sounds the least W.A.S.P. to me. The songs seem to be faster and heavier and done somehow with… I don´t know… totally different approach than any of their other stuff before or after “KFD”. They have keyboards here, they used some programming here and there. Not that any of those matter that much, I think they used keyboards before this too. But listen to the very first sounds from “Kill Fuck Die” and you fucken hear that they have very different way of playing or whatever on “KFD”. This is also the first album Chris Holmes played on after his departure from WASP after the 1989´s “Headless Children” album. Maybe his presence after all those years had something to do with this album being what it is. Or maybe not.
I was somewhat disappointed with the album prior to “KFD”, “Still not black enough”, which was released in 1995, so I had no big expectations for “KFD”. But when I put this disk into my cd-player I swear the fucken god it felt exactly the same to hear the opening track from this album than it felt years ago when I heard the “I wanna be somebody” the first time. It knocked my socks off.
Blackie always liked to put at least one slower track to WASP albums, and “Kill, fuck, die” is not an exception. Although on this album even the slower song sounds so angry that it´s hard to think it as a basic slow track. The track you ask? Well, it is the “My tortured eyes”. And do I even have to tell you that you need to hear it in order to know what I´m talking about.
From this album I´d say that “U” has probably the most in-your-face lyrics: “Listen to me now No words, I can say, can describe how I hate your fucking face…” and the chorus being simple: “You fucken suck”. Yeah, I shit you not, it definatelly sounds that Blackie pronounces it as “fucken”, not “fucking”. But I think I spent too much time with K. But if that´s not the case then K has to rethink his stance of being “the” one coming up with how to spell “fucking”. And did this have anything to do with the actual review? Probably not, but since it´s me writing it, you can go read the fucken daily newspaper if this doesn´t interest you.
“The horror” is more than perfect for ending track. It´s also slower, but it isn´t a slow track. It´s slower than for example “Killahead” or “Kill Fuck Die”, but it´s still more aggressive than “My tortured eyes”. This song has kind of depressing feeling in it and for some reason the lyrics make me think “Apocalypse. Now” movie. Maybe it has some lyriclines that have resemblance to something said in that movie (the very last words of Marlon Brando, anyone?) or maybe not. Or it just could be the dark mood this song has. Either way, the song kicks ass.
I´m still waiting when W.A.S.P. makes an album similar to this (or their s/t). Their releases after “KFD” have been good, and I´d consider “Dying for the world” to be a damn good try to get close to KFD. But you know, once you drive a Ferrari, it doesn´t feel the same anymore to drive Chevy, even if it would be equipped with all the up-to-date luxuries. Since I never rode either one, I´m not sure did that make any sense. I hope so.
